The classical acupuncture Meridians mapped out thousands of years ago correspond quite closely to the anatomical course of peripheral nerves. The energy of “Chi” of traditional acupuncture is now thought to be the recordable electrical activity of the nerves. Modern advances in neurophysiology are bringing the ancient “art” of acupuncture into the 21st Century and making the practice of acupuncture a safe and effective medical specialty. The application of modern technology to historical acupuncture theory is producing amazing results for patients, eliminating the guesswork and trial-and-error often associated with traditional acupuncture practice. Being also board certified in neurology (the in-depth study of the nerves)has allowed me to maximize the results for my patients. The foundation of acupuncture is the nervous system so my knowledge of acupuncture and neurology is a great benefit to my patients in terms of more effective treatment.
Know the nerves & know acupuncture
I was fortunate enough to be a member of the charter class of chiropractic neurologists. This three year post gradate program is the detailed study of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. It deals, in particular, with reflex mechanisms in the nervous system that can be used to re-program the nerves for the purpose of restoring normal function. It didn’t take me long after beginning this program to see the similarity between chiropractic neurology and acupuncture. Acupuncture utilizes the same neurological reflexes to normalize function in the body and restore health. To maintain my status as a Diplomat of the American Chiropractic Academy of Neurology, I must update my knowledge in field of neurology yearly. The field of neurology is exploding with new information and new technology to both assess and treat the function of the nervous system. I use this new information and apply it to the practice of acupuncture. This combination of neurology and acupuncture allows me to treat the most difficult and severe cases.
